My Turn at the Well

In the book of John, we read about a woman who met Jesus when she was going about her day to day tasks.  She was going to fetch water.  "When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?”   I think about this woman and where her heart might have been at the very moment she came face to face with Jesus.  Imagine being in her shoes (or sandals) - you are going through the day getting all your to dos taken care of, and there He is, standing before you.

According to scripture, this woman had seen great heartache.  I assume she felt confused, lonely & seeking someone to love her - she had been married 5 times and was living with a man.  When she runs into Jesus, there's no need of sharing her story.  He already knows her heart, perhaps even better than she does. What a comfort knowing someone who already understands all our challenges, fears and hurts.  No need to pour our hearts out because he knows. Just as he asked the Samaritan woman, "will you give me a drink", he asks the same of us.  He is waiting at the well for us when we come to the place in life when we are thirsty for reassurance, comfort, and peace.   He steps into our path and begins to quench our needs & fill our soul.

"You’re acquainted with physical thirst. Stop drinking and see what happens. Coherent thoughts vanish, skin grows clammy, and vital organs shut down. Deprive your body of necessary fluid, and it will tell you. Deprive your soul of spiritual water, and it will tell you. Dehydrated hearts send desperate messages. Snarling tempers. Waves of worry. Growing guilt and fear. Hopelessness. Resentment. Loneliness. Insecurity. But you don’t have to live with a dehydrated heart. God invites you to treat your thirsty soul as you would treat your physical thirst. Just visit the WELL and drink deeply."

Have you been to the well?  Where are you in your life?  Are you stumbling through each day trying to make sense of this world?  Go with me to the well.  Stop and picture yourself standing before Jesus.  As he looks into your eyes, you feel this overwhelming sense that he knows everything thing in your heart.  With that knowledge, comes a tenderness you've never felt before.  A tenderness that goes to your core and comforts you.  When I think about sitting with Jesus, I envision myself sitting on the edge of the well, with my feet dangling like that of a small girl, He meets me there.  He is the picture of true intimacy, love & beautiful grace.  Oh to be able to stumble into His presence in this life.  To go get water and there he stands before your very eyes.  To feel His love...faithful and sacrificing love.
