Kiss the Son

Psalm 2:12 tells us to "kiss the Son".  How do we kiss God's Son?  A kiss is suppose to be a way of expressing love and affection, but is it always?  To examine kisses in our modern day could take us way off course, so we are going to look at kisses in the Bible.

In Biblical times, it was common for people to greet each other with a kiss.  A kiss then was some what like a hand shake today.  Romans 16:16  "Greet one another with a holy kiss."  The holy kiss was suppose to be one of heartfelt love, yet with time it became a custom with little or no meaning.  This might be referred to as the empty kiss.  Some of our kisses to the Lord might reflect this.  Have our efforts for Him become mere actions with little meaning.  When I think of this kind of kiss, I'm reminded of the scripture found in Revelations. "So, because you are lukewarm--neither hot nor cold--I am about to spit you out of my mouth."  God doesn't want us to just go through the actions, He wants our hearts to be entwined with His - so in love with Who He is and what He has done for us.

Most people would have to agree the least favorite kiss is the kiss of betrayal.  Luke 22:47-48  "While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him,  but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”  Nothing grieves the Lord more than to be betrayed by those who say they are followers and say they love Him.  One definition of betrayal read to be unfaithful in guarding, maintaining and fulfilling a trust.  I pray we don't kiss our Lord with betrayal kisses - by being unfaithful in guarding, maintaining and fulfilling His will in our lives.

Third is the kiss of thankfulness.  Luke 7: 37-38 "A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them." What an outpouring of thankfulness for what Christ had done for this broken woman.  She recognized her forgiveness and her presence before a Holy Lord was not because of anything she did, but because of Who He was and the love she had in her heart for Him.  She honored Him with her worship.  What a lesson for us all!  He made a huge difference in her life and she knew it.  Our attempts to show Him our honor and praise are sweet kisses to Him.

Fourth is the kiss of love.  Christ sees our hearts - He knows how much we truly love Him.  He looks down upon us desiring us to genuinely seek Him in Love.  Do we love our Savior?  How do we kiss our Lord in love?  Scriptures tells us how to love - John 14:15  "If you love me, keep my commands."  1Timothy 1:5  "The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith."  Ephesians 5:2  "Walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God."  Romans 12:9  "Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good."  Deuteronomy 6:5  "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength." Deuteronomy 7:9  "Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments."

There is a final kiss I uncovered in my study.  In Psalm 85:10, "Mercy and truth have met together;
righteousness and peace have kissed."  This would have to be the sweetest kiss.  In this scripture, it is beautiful because two things come together in a kiss - mercy & truth.  It is almost impossible for these two to co exist.  Truth equals holiness and no room for error or hypocrisy.  Mercy on the other hand overlooks error and hypocrisy.  These can be seen as incompatible.  However in this verse, they meet and kiss.  How did this happen?  Only through Christ - John 1:17  "For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ."  Through mercy, Jesus delivered us into the presence of God and His righteousness.  Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."  Romans 5:1  When Christ was sacrificed on the cross - righteousness and peace kissed.
