"Wave motion is activity that carries energy from one place to another without actually moving any matter."
This picture of wave motion reminds me of sin. The droplet is the sin of a person. The ripples are the effect that sin has on everyone else in their life. The choices we make impact all the people we encounter especially those who are closest to us. Have you ever fallen victim to the ripples of another person's sin?
Sin carries with it many consequences. One definition of sin is, "Actions by which people rebel against God, miss His purpose for their life, and surrender to the power of evil rather than to God." We face decisions every day and don't always make the right ones. As a result, there can be hurt, confusion & hopefully in the end a lesson learned. I would assume it is safe to say we have all had heartaches because of the choices of another person. It starts as a child - parents make bad decisions and the child suffers. As the years pass, we feel the ripples of pain from siblings & friendships. I am certain everyone will be in agreement that in marriage, the choices of a spouse can leave life-long scars. Let's not forget the tremendous pain as a parent, when we experience the heartache tied to our children's choices and consequences that follow.
How do we avoid sin? Before you act, ask yourself is this what God would want for me? Psalm 119:11 "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. " God's word leads us away from sin and to a happier life. One filled with no regrets. The sad thing is for most of us, we find ways to rationalize sin. We reason with ourselves...it's my decision, it's my body, it's my right, it's not a big deal, everyone else is doing it, I'm not as bad as him/her, or I'm the only one it will hurt. Remember others always pay a price for our mistakes...children are disappointed, friends are broken, families are destroyed, & most parents can not separate themselves from the hurt of their children.
Sin does not go unnoticed. Be warned...there will always be a consequence that follows. Galatians 6:7-8 "Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. " The greatest consequence of our sin is eternal separation from God. Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Jesus died for our sin so that we could have eternal life with Him in heaven. He took our penalty on the cross. Romans 6:10 "When he died, he died once to break the power of sin. But now that he lives, he lives for the glory of God." Break the cycle of sin - accept Jesus as your Savior and live to please Him - don't miss His wonderful purpose for your life.
